Venus-Aphrodite

ALibran feels an irresistible attraction toward others who may exercise an influence.  The principal psychological function is feeling. A Libran has an amiable expression, as well as a pleasing and melodious voice.

@Librans may lack the ability to judge carefully as a result of excessive adaptation to other persons or to their surroundings.

Librans' emotions are of esthetic nature.  They are not guided by rigorous contemplation, but by the mood of a given moment

Libra is ruled by Venus-Aphrodite, representing the beauty, harmony, and love which

inspire many artists.

Venus-Aphrodite was born from the sea-foam which formed when Saturn threw the genitals of Uranus into the sea.

@Uranus is the father of the universe. Hence, Aphrodite is the daughter of the sky.

@Aphrodite emerged naked, astride a sea-shell, with the sea serving as her mirror.

Everyone said that she floated through the air, accompanied by doves and sparrows.

The Fates had chosen a unique divine duty for Aphrodite: to love

Aphrodite wore a magic sash which caused everyone to fall in love with her, but she seldom lent it to other goddesses.

Aphrodite behaved in a rather fickle manner. She had many lovers: Dionysus, Poseidon, Mars, Mercury, Anchises, and Adonis.

One of her lovers was Mercury, or Hermes, who symbolizes all types of relationships.

Their child was Hermaphroditus, who had the characteristics of both sexes.

@Poseidon, or Neptune, was also one of Aphrodite's lovers. As the god of the seas, he represented the infinite and the limitless, the world of illusions or spiritual awareness.

Librans can cause order to emerge from chaos, because they are skilled at creating harmony, peace, and simplicity.

Librans communicate through intuition instead of logic.

Librans show a certain fascination with natural beauty and they possess a unique capacity to reflect others' feelings.  People feel at ease in their presence.

Librans express an airy and fluid, or almost ethereal, image.  Warmth and natural kindness are expressed with all living things, even animals, toward whom they may often display great affection.

Librans cannot live without warmth This is a person who thrives on contact with others.  Librans may be easily influenced by others.

Librans defend prerogatives stubbornly.  This is a restless and excitable personality, without great selfconfidence.

In terms of love, Librans' feelings are sincere although they may seem to waver. Their affections may stray because love is confused with immediate attraction.  Fickleness may arise from adaptability, unawareness of differences, or a desire to conciliate.

It is not possible to remain angry, however, because a Libran is extremely skilled in overcoming difficulties.  This is a person with exceptional tact.

Librans promote peace and seek to

create equitable relationships.

@Because Librans possess the ability to gain knowledge through inner impressions, there is an inclination to dream and seek spiritual values.

Her most long-lasting relationship was with Mars, the god of War, who symbolizes passion and violence, the antithesis of Aphrodite.

Eros, who inspired sexual attraction, was the child of Venus and Mars.

When Aphrodite complained that Eros had remained too childlike, Themis advised her to bear him a brother.  This was Anteros.

Another lover of Aphrodite was Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry.

Another lover of Aphrodite was Anchises, a mortal whom she defended against Jupiter's thunderbolts.

Adonis, a symbol of male beauty, also shared Aphrodite's bed.

The Kidneys

The kidneys are the part of the body associated with Libra.  Through excretion, the kidneys ensure a balance between the body and its environment.

Librans seek an ideal combination, a merging of opposites. Someone with different traits is needed to provide equilibrium.

Because a Libran inspires a desire for partnership, this is a person who is highly suited for marriage (a Libran places a high value upon conciliation).

A Libran always feels a need to be compensated for his or her actions. Each act must be reciprocated. Alternation is necessary for equilibrium.

A Libran likes to encourage joy and celebration so that everyone will attain satisfaction. A Libran promotes a festive atmosphere.

Because Librans are emotional, they pour out their feelts to others, and defend the weak.

Librans are attracted by beauty, and they possess esthetic instincts, as well as highly developed artistic inclinations.

Balance and refinement are traits associated with Librans; their behavior and their appearance can reflect harmony between the inner person and the external world. Their gestures are precise, and they move gracefully.

These sources provide the zodiacal formula for Libra: an autumnal, cardinal, airy, and Venusian temperament, associated with the kidneys.  These symbolic tendencies may be expressed in the following manner:

A Quest for a Balance between Introversion and Extroversion

Although Librans may be inclined toward spiritual values and introversion, they seek to share the benefits of their internal equilibrium with others. Their temperament is accompanied by a certain detachment, and there may be an inclination toward contemplativeness.  Gandhi, Lanza del Vasto, or Virgil would exemplify this tendency. When Librans are inclined toward external values or extroversion, they communicate spontaneity and a zest for life; for example, there is Brigitte Bardot.

Notwithstanding specific modes of behavior, a Libran always seeks a suitable milieu for harmony and peace. For example, there is Gandhi's espousal of non-violence, or Erasmus' desire to reconcile Socrates and Jesus.

"Intelligence of the Heart" and the Just Mean

Weighing the pros and cons of ideas, Librans use intuitive thought processes, and display a certain independence in intellectual matters.  The philosopher Bergson explored intuition, but refrained from making affirmations without evidence.

The beam wavers between the two trays. Frangois Mauriac was a Libran who was inclined toward both intellectualism and, sexuality.

When the beam reaches the midpoint, each tray bears the same weight; then the individual can put himself in another's place in order to understand. Gandhi possessed this type of instinctive intelligence.

In my opinion, the symbol of the scale is the truest symbol of this mode of thought.

An Amorous Esthetic and "A Fickle Heart"

Librans weigh pros and cons for long periods of time before making commitments.  Thus, Madame Bovary reflects both credulity and frivolity, or there is Pauline Borghese' synthesis of marriage and free love.

Librans are most strongly inclined to repudiate extremes.  Their thought processes may be externally represented by changing of partners or if they do not reveal their thoughts, they seem hesitant.

In one form or another, a Libran seeks an equilibrium between loving Beauty and loving Virtue, although it is sometimes difficult to reconcile these inclinations.

The Libra ideogram consists of two superimposed dashes: the first represents an interrupted equilibrium, and the second restoration of equilibrium. This ideogram corresponds to a person who quickly seeks compensation for excesses, with a strong instinctive drive to regain serenity. Libra embodies alternation.
