Mercury's father was Jupiter, the ruler of Olympus and the god of Laws and enlightening Intuition.  His mother was Maia, who personified the beginning of spring, symbolizing external expres-sion of the self, or projection of the self upon the external world Understanding the external world comes easily to a Gemini.  His perceptions are instinctive..

In his infancy, Mercury overturned his crib when his mother, Maia, was not watching, and he set forth to discover the vast world outside.A Gemini is curious about everything.  He prefers adventures to tranquillity, and he may be unstable,

Mercury decided to steal the heifers of Apollo.  In order to conceal their tracks, he made sandals from the bark of trees and placed them on the heifers' hooves Energetic and clever, a Gemini sur-prises others, especially when he amuses himself by flouting certain accepted rules.  He overthrows or ridicules traditions, stripping away the dramatic con-tent.  He is attracted to controversy and parodies.

Mercury killed two heifers and used their skins to make cords for a new instrument which he had invented: the lyre.  With his lyre, Mercury was able to play extraordinary melodies.Usually, his aim is to introduce a new harmony, or to offer a new way of interpreting things.

Apollo found Mercury in a cave and led him to Jupiter on Olympus.  After having brilliantly defended his actions before the gods, Mercury confessed to everything.  Won over by his charm, his liveliness, and his musical skills, the gods pardoned him.Impressionable and vulnerable, a Gemini finds it difficult to challenge others; he would prefer to be accepted.  He is restless, and uses words and a talent for eloquence to win admiration.  He is a seducer.

"Give me the tortoise-shell lyre," Apollo said, "and I'll give you the heifers." In response, Mercury cut some reeds, and, in order to replace the lyre, he created a flute on which he played an entrancing solo A Gemini is not possessive, and he does not seek to make others feel obligated to him.  He cheerfully releases them from moral debts and constraints by rapidly reestablishing a basis for mak-ing exchanges.     A Gemini prizes indepen-dence for others as well as for himself. He is a generous person ..

Jupiter welcomed Mercury to Olym-pus and appointed him the messenger of the gods.  The symbols of his duties were a round helmet (a symbol of power) and winged sandals (a symbol of speed).Jupiter also gave him a special messen-ger's staff, adorned with white ribbons.A Gemini is capable of overcoming his intellectual diversity and of elevating his thought toward lofty ideals.  He then expresses his understanding of the world to others.  A Gemini can be a person who stimulates and enlightens.

Mercury became the patron of merchants, jurists, intellectuals, and thieves.Willing to act in behalf of his own interests or those of others, a Gemini is seldom deterred by conventional moral-ity: he solves problems ouside the realm of commonly accepted values.  Reacting to the inspiration of a given moment, he pursues goals directly.  "Living on the fringes of legality, they (Geminis) can be geniuses or master criminals" (Marcelle Senard)
